Life by Haus

About

Life by Haus is a full-service interior design firm based in New York, founded by design historian Jaclyn Houseknecht, M.A. Trained at Parsons School of Design, Jaclyn brings an academically informed, curatorially refined perspective to every project. The studio is recognized for creating timeless, highly considered interiors that balance historical influence with the demands of modern living.

Every project is approached with rigorous intention, grounded in a deep respect for architectural context and the narrative potential of each space. We interpret a broad spectrum of aesthetics—historical, coastal, contemporary, and beyond—through a discerning lens, ensuring that each interior reflects a cohesive and elevated design ideology rather than a singular stylistic category.

Whether the scope involves a single room or an entire residence, no project is considered too modest or too expansive. Each commission receives the same level of scholarly attention, creative discipline, and exacting detail, resulting in environments that are not only refined and enduring, but also intellectually grounded and profoundly personal.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Our design philosophy is founded on the principle that every space possesses a narrative shaped by its architecture, history, and inhabitants. Educated in interior design, design history and art history, Jaclyn approaches each project as an interpretive dialogue—balancing tradition with contemporary relevance in ways that feel both timeless and deeply considered.

We work across a diverse range of aesthetics, from historical to coastal to contemporary, yet remain grounded in the enduring principles of proportion, cohesion, and restraint. Our process prioritizes architectural integrity, material authenticity, and intellectual clarity, resulting in interiors that transcend trend and cultivate lasting meaning.
